iconic shoe designer andré Perugia @ BAta shoe museum

When I heard there was an André Perugia exhibit at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, I did not walk; I ran. To me, André Perugia represents the moment when shoes stopped being just accessories and became works of art. He is one of the greatest innovators in the history of footwear, full stop. He literally transformed shoes into wearable works of art through his extraordinary blend of craftsmanship, engineering, and surrealist imagination and worked for the likes of Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy to name only a few heavy hitters of the time. Perugia constantly pushed the boundaries of what a shoe could be; inspiring generations of designers to come after him, from Roger Vivier, Manolo Blahnik to Christian Louboutin and Nicholas Kirkwood, who have embraced his belief that footwear can be both technically innovative and artistically expressive. Looking at Perugia's work today, it's easy to see that his shoes were never just made to complete an outfit; they were designed to tell a story, spark curiosity, and celebrate the limitless possibilities of creativity. If you have the chance, check out the exhibit in Toronto or research images of André Perugia’s work and prepare for your mind to be blown. I’m so glad I got to learn more about the history of André Perugia, that man was and still is an icon.
